Insecta Lepidoptera-Heterocera Pl. 066 (1879) by Frederick DuCane Godman is a refined Victorian zoological illustration devoted to moths. Created at the height of the 19th century’s passion for cataloging the natural world, this plate arranges multiple specimens on a crisp white ground to allow effortless comparison of wing shape, pattern, and structure. Part of the landmark Biologia Centrali‑Americana, it unites scientific clarity with elegant composition—an image made for close study and quiet admiration alike.
Offered here as a high-quality fine art print, your piece is produced on museum-grade, acid-free archival paper or on artist’s cotton canvas for a textured, gallery-ready look. Available in a range of sizes from intimate to statement-making, it can be ordered unframed or expertly framed. The Unique Maps Co. also offers personalization—such as custom captions—and bespoke sizing to fit existing frames or specific wall plans.
Frederick DuCane Godman (1834–1919) was an English naturalist, collector, and organizer of major scientific enterprises of his era. Closely associated with the meticulous observational tradition that defined Victorian natural history, he helped shape how biodiversity from Central America was documented and shared with scholars and the public. His work championed field-collected accuracy translated into clear, publishable imagery that stood the test of time.
This plate is notable for its role in the grand Victorian project of taxonomy. “Heterocera,” the historical term then used for moths within the order Lepidoptera, signals the period’s emphasis on distinguishing and classifying life with precision. The specimens are thoughtfully spaced and annotated, reflecting the educational purpose of the series; species names appear to guide identification, reinforcing the plate’s function as both a teaching tool and a record of discovery.
A restrained, natural palette—white, soft oranges, warm browns, and subtle grays—keeps the focus on diagnostic markings and wing venation. Fine lines and delicate shading, characteristic of 19th‑century lithographic techniques, provide depth without crowding the page. Symmetrical forms and evenly balanced spacing lend the work a calm rhythm, making it as suitable for a study or library as it is for a modern living room. For lovers of entomology and classic design, this is a compelling conversation piece that celebrates the meeting of art and science.
A thoughtful gift for naturalists, collectors, and design enthusiasts, this print suits birthdays, graduations, housewarmings, and holidays such as Christmas, Mother’s Day, or Father’s Day—especially meaningful for anyone who has traveled in Central America or cherishes the elegant legacy of Victorian scientific illustration.
