Frederick DuCane Godman’s Insecta Lepidoptera-Heterocera Pl. 043 (1879) is a consummate example of Victorian zoological illustration, created at a moment when the visual cataloguing of nature was central to scientific discovery. Drawn from the monumental natural history enterprise that documented the Lepidoptera of Central America, this plate assembles multiple moth specimens with the clarity and restraint that made such images indispensable to scholars. Here, structure, pattern, and coloration take precedence over narrative, allowing the viewer to study each form with a taxonomist’s eye and an artist’s appreciation for beauty.

This listing offers a museum-quality fine art print of the plate, produced on your choice of acid-free archival paper or luxurious artist’s cotton canvas. The Unique Maps Co. prints with richly saturated, fade-resistant inks to preserve the delicacy of the original linework and the soft natural palette. Multiple sizes are available, along with professional framing and matting options. Personalization and customization—such as custom captions, margins, or inscription panels—can be added on request to suit your space, project, or gift.

Godman (1834–1919) was an English naturalist and collector whose work—much of it undertaken with fellow naturalist collaborators—helped shape late 19th-century understanding of biodiversity. As part of a generation deeply engaged in fieldwork, classification, and publication, he oversaw and contributed to a body of scholarship that brought order and visibility to species previously unknown to European science. His name is closely associated with rigorous observation and the careful presentation of zoological data, bridging the disciplines of art and science.

The subject of this plate, the moths of the Heterocera (a historical term within Lepidoptera), is presented in a format devised for identification and comparison. The composition aligns the specimens on a pristine white ground, each moth isolated so its wing shapes, venation, and markings can be read at a glance. Such images informed entomologists and educators across the Victorian era, when illustrated plates were the working tools of taxonomy and the public’s window onto the astonishing richness of the natural world—especially in biodiversity hotspots like Central America.

A refined, earthy palette lends the print both accuracy and warmth. Creams and soft beiges articulate the wing fields; fine brown stippling and linework pick out venation and body segments; and measured accents of orange and tan animate eye-spots, fasciae, and borders. The symmetrical wing shapes create a quiet visual rhythm, while the spare layout and generous negative space keep the plate calm and readable. It is as elegant in a study or library as it is striking in a modern living room; collectors drawn to natural history, Victorian design, or entomology will find it a versatile and conversation-worthy piece.

Beautifully printed and easy to tailor to your interior, this plate makes a thoughtful gift for nature lovers, science teachers, and seasoned travelers—ideal for Christmas, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, a new home or office, or for anyone recently returned from adventures in Central America and inspired by its remarkable biodiversity.
