Insecta Lepidoptera-Heterocera Pl 040 (1879–1915) by Frederick DuCane Godman captures the Victorian zeal for discovery at its most precise and disciplined. First issued in 1879 as part of a long-running natural history project, this plate focuses on Heterocera—moths and other nocturnal butterflies—arranged with the orderly clarity that helped researchers compare wing shapes, patterns, and colors at a glance. On a crisp white ground, specimens are rendered with quiet authority, their ochres, yellows, and sunlit oranges balanced by soft browns and subtle greens, reflecting the meticulous, observation-first ethos of late-19th-century scientific art.

This is a museum-quality fine art print produced by The Unique Maps Co., available on acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas. Choose from a range of sizes to suit your space, with optional framing and mounts to create a ready-to-hang piece. We also offer personalization—add a title block, dedication, or date—and custom scaling to achieve exactly the presentation you envision for your home, studio, or office.

Frederick DuCane Godman (1834–1919) was a distinguished English naturalist, collector, and patron of scientific exploration. Best known for his editorial work on expansive surveys of Central American biodiversity, Godman championed the union of art and science at a moment when illustrated volumes were vital tools for classification. His plates were not mere decorations; they were instruments of knowledge, created to be handled, compared, and debated by naturalists and enthusiasts across a rapidly globalizing world.

This particular sheet is notable for its clarity of arrangement and its role in the taxonomic enterprise of the period. The moths are purposefully spaced, allowing the eye to move specimen by specimen and note diagnostic details—banding near the margins, dots and streaks set along veins, and subtle gradations of color that change from the body outward across the wings. The composition reflects the instructional logic of Victorian entomology: even spacing, consistent scale, and neutral ground to eliminate distraction and foreground form, pattern, and comparative morphology.

Aesthetically, the image is a study in restrained beauty. Against a luminous white field, the wings’ tawny oranges and yolk-like yellows feel warm but never garish, tethered by umber lines and soft olive undertones. Fine strokes build texture and a delicate three-dimensionality across bodies and hindwings, while variations in wing silhouette—from elongated, sail-like forms to compact, triangular profiles—create an elegant rhythm on the page. It is this union of accuracy and grace that makes the print so compelling: a quietly dramatic tableau that rewards both close study and contemplative viewing.

An inspired choice for naturalists, science teachers, and collectors of Victorian design, this print also suits anyone seeking art with a calm, intelligent presence—ideal for a study, library wall, or nature-themed gallery. It makes a thoughtful gift for Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, or a housewarming, and a particularly fitting present for travelers and wildlife enthusiasts who cherish the history of exploration and the beauty of the natural world.
