Insecta Lepidoptera-Heterocera Pl. 024 (1879) by Frederick DuCane Godman is a quintessential Victorian zoological illustration devoted to the careful study of moths. Created at a time when natural history plates were indispensable to taxonomy and research, this scientific sheet arranges multiple specimens with clinical clarity so their forms, markings, and subtle colour variations can be compared at a glance. The composition balances art and inquiry: each moth is rendered with fine, disciplined linework and naturalistic hues, set against a crisp white ground that spotlights structure over ornament.
Offered here as a high-quality fine art print, this piece is produced on your choice of acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas. The Unique Maps Co. can craft it in a range of sizes, with optional framing and matting to suit your space. Personalization is available—add a caption, dedication, or custom title—and we’re happy to accommodate bespoke requests such as adjusted borders for mounting or tailored dimensions for gallery walls.
Frederick DuCane Godman was an English naturalist and collector whose career epitomized the rigorous spirit of late 19th-century science. Known for his commitment to precise documentation, he championed the meticulous recording of insect life that fueled advances in lepidopterology. His plates communicate both scholarship and curiosity, inviting viewers to appreciate small distinctions that define species—an approach that set a benchmark for scientific illustration of the era.
This particular plate focuses on moths—historically gathered under the term “Heterocera”—and presents them as a comparative study. Each specimen is shown to reveal diagnostic features: the shape of the wings, the symmetry of the bodies, and the arrangement of bands, veining, and spots. Rather than embellishment, the intent is clarity; the orderly layout mirrors the taxonomic ambition of the period, encouraging close looking and side-by-side evaluation.
Visually, the print is understated yet captivating. A clean white field frames a natural palette of soft yellows, warm ochres, gentle browns, and quiet orange accents. Fine strokes and delicate shading suggest the velvety texture of wings and the crisp edges of scalloped margins. The result is a calm, observational image that bridges art and science—a refined focal point for a study, reading nook, or contemporary gallery wall. For collectors, it’s an elegant way to honor the history of science; for design enthusiasts, it offers a timeless, neutral palette that pairs beautifully with botanical and natural-history decor.
A thoughtful gift for entomologists, naturalists, teachers, and curious minds alike, this print suits occasions from Christmas, Father’s Day, and Mother’s Day to birthdays and housewarmings. It’s a graceful celebration of Victorian inquiry—an ode to the quiet marvels of the moth world.
