Insecta Lepidoptera-Heterocera Pl. 035 (1879) by Frederick DuCane Godman is a luminous example of Victorian zoological illustration at its zenith—when natural history plates were created with both scientific rigor and aesthetic grace. Published in the late 19th century, this carefully observed study focuses on moths, presenting multiple specimens on a pale ground in a clean, taxonomic arrangement that invites close comparison of shape, pattern, and wing venation. Godman, an English naturalist born in 1834, belonged to a generation that advanced the systematic study of biodiversity through richly illustrated volumes that made the microscopic legible and the intricate elegantly clear.

This listing offers a museum-quality fine art print, produced on your choice of acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas. The Unique Maps Co. prints with crisp, color-true fidelity to honor the original plate’s subtle hues and delicate linework. Multiple sizes are available, with optional curated framing and matting to suit classic or contemporary interiors. We also offer light personalization—such as a discreet caption or plate reference—to create a piece tailored to your space or collection.

About the artist: Frederick DuCane Godman was a leading figure in 19th-century natural history, known for his role in expanding the catalog of global biodiversity through methodical collecting, editing, and publication. His work helped bridge field observation and scholarly classification, bringing structure and clarity to complex groups like Lepidoptera. The precision and balance in his plates reflect a disciplined eye trained equally by science and design.

About the subject: Moths within Lepidoptera: Heterocera are presented here with an emphasis on comparative morphology—subtle differences in wing shape, antennae, banding, and eyespots are set into relief by the neutral, white background. This format embodies the Victorian push toward systematization, where orderly presentation supported identification and knowledge-sharing among naturalists. The plate’s cadence of forms reads almost like a visual index: each specimen distinct, yet part of a coherent whole.

About the color and style: Earthy browns, ochres, and muted creams play across wings that carry the powdery, velvety suggestion of scales, while measured touches of orange and yellow bring warmth and focus to key markings. Fine strokes and delicate shading capture textures with convincing realism, and the symmetrical placement reinforces the plate’s calm, analytical beauty. It’s a piece that brings quiet sophistication to a room—equally at home above a writing desk, in a study or library wall, or grouped in a natural history salon with other botanical and zoological prints.

This timeless print makes a thoughtful gift for lovers of entomology and the natural sciences, as well as vintage illustration and Victorian-era design. Ideal for Christmas, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, birthdays, graduations, or housewarmings, it’s also a refined present for teachers, researchers, and anyone who finds beauty in the precision of the natural world.
