Frederick DuCane Godman’s Insecta Lepidoptera–Heterocera Pl 069 (1879) is a Victorian zoological illustration devoted to moths at a moment when natural history surged from private curiosity to organized science. Issued in the early years of the monumental Biologia Centrali‑Americana project, the plate exemplifies the period’s aim: to record, compare, and classify with exquisite clarity. Multiple specimens are arrayed on a pale field, their forms isolated for study so that subtle distinctions of wing shape, pattern, and posture can be read at a glance.
This listing offers a museum‑quality fine art print, reproduced from high‑resolution archival sources and available on acid‑free, heavyweight paper or on artist’s cotton canvas. Choose from a range of standard and custom sizes, with optional conservation‑grade framing and matting. The Unique Maps Co. can further personalize your print with custom captions, dedication lines, and layout refinements to suit your space or a recipient’s taste.
Godman (1834–1919) was a leading figure in Victorian natural history, renowned for his tireless scholarship and for championing large‑scale scientific publishing. As co‑editor of Biologia Centrali‑Americana, he helped coordinate an ambitious survey of Central American flora and fauna, commissioning specialists and overseeing the production of finely printed plates that became indispensable to taxonomists and collectors alike. This plate reflects that culture of meticulous observation and beautifully made reference works.
The subject—Lepidoptera: Heterocera—highlights the astonishing variety found among moths, from their plume‑like antennae to banded, speckled, or scalloped wings adapted for camouflage and display. Arranged with taxonomic logic and painterly restraint, the specimens can be compared side by side, turning the page into both a teaching tool and a window into late‑19th‑century field science. As with many plates from this era, a lithographic process captures minute details crisply, ensuring that diagnostic markings remain legible for study.
Aesthetically, the palette leans to warm natural tones—tawny browns, russets, and gentle oranges—held against a clean white ground that amplifies contrast while keeping the composition calm and ordered. Fine stippling and hair‑line strokes suggest membrane, scaling, and the soft “fur” on thoraxes, while symmetrical wing spreads create a rhythm that reads as both scientific diagram and elegant ornament. The restrained color, the careful spacing of forms, and the quiet typography at the base make this a versatile print for interiors—equally at home in a study, a library wall, or a contemporary living space where natural history becomes design.
Thoughtful and timeless, this Victorian entomological plate makes a wonderful gift for naturalists, insect enthusiasts, and lovers of vintage science—perfect for Christmas, birthdays, Father’s Day or Mother’s Day, a housewarming, or for someone returning from travels in Central America with a renewed appreciation for its biodiversity.
