Frederick DuCane Godman’s Insecta Lepidoptera-Heterocera Pl. 038, published in 1879, is a classic Victorian zoological illustration that bridges art and science. Rendered with the clarity demanded by nineteenth‑century taxonomy, the plate arrays nocturnal Lepidoptera in a measured composition that invites close study. Clean white ground and meticulously inked outlines highlight each specimen’s distinctive markings, reflecting the era’s fascination with cataloguing the natural world and turning observation into ordered knowledge.

This listing offers a museum‑quality fine art print, produced on your choice of acid‑free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas. Available in a range of sizes, it can be ordered unframed or expertly framed with conservation materials. The Unique Maps Co. also provides personalization and customization—think custom title plates, dated captions, matching series sets, or coordinated margins—so your print is ready to hang or gift straight from the box.

About the artist: Frederick DuCane Godman (born 1834) was an English naturalist and collector whose work helped shape modern entomology. Part of a generation that placed precision at the heart of natural history, Godman valued illustrations as essential records—standardizing visual information so scholars and enthusiasts could compare, classify, and communicate with confidence. His plates remain admired for their blend of scientific authority and aesthetic restraint.

About the work: This plate embodies the Victorian period’s systematic approach to nature. Each moth is carefully positioned, numbered, and labeled, capturing diagnostic traits from wing shape to antennae. The presentation isn’t merely decorative—it’s taxonomically meaningful, a visual index to structure and variation that would have aided identification long before color photography was practical or widespread.

About the look and why you’ll love it: The palette is elegantly muted—creams, soft browns, and subtle greys—punctuated by warm notes of orange and yellow that echo real specimens without exaggeration. Fine, delicate strokes articulate wing venation and texture; symmetrical silhouettes sit in crisp relief against the white background. The effect is timeless: handsome enough for a living room or hallway gallery wall, quietly scholarly for a study or library, and wonderfully calming for nature‑inspired interiors. It’s a thoughtful choice for lepidopterists and design lovers alike.

A refined celebration of natural history, this print makes a distinctive gift—ideal for Christmas, birthdays, Father’s or Mother’s Day, a housewarming, or for anyone newly returned from a museum visit or field excursion with a renewed curiosity about the living world.
