Frederick DuCane Godman’s Insecta Lepidoptera-Heterocera Pl. 061 (1879) is a quintessential Victorian zoological illustration that unites scientific clarity with quiet elegance. Created during a period when meticulous images were essential to the study of biodiversity before photography became widespread, this plate presents a carefully arranged selection of moths against a pale ground. It forms part of Godman’s work on Central American fauna—produced for the landmark Biologia Centrali‑Americana—where each specimen’s form, markings, and structure are rendered for close comparison and confident identification.
Offered as a museum-quality fine art print, this piece is available on acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas. The Unique Maps Co. produces a range of sizes—from intimate study formats to bold statement pieces—with optional borders, custom trim to fit ready-made frames, and professional framing in black, white, or natural wood. Personalization is welcome, including bespoke sizing and curated sets with companion plates to create a harmonized gallery wall.
Godman (1834–1919) was an English naturalist deeply engaged in the 19th century’s grand project of classification and collection. His illustrations, created in collaboration with fellow scholars and artists, helped build a visual language of Lepidoptera, making subtle distinctions legible to researchers and enthusiasts alike. Pl. 061 belongs to the historical taxonomy of “Heterocera,” a period term for moths, and reflects how Victorian science balanced empirical observation with a commitment to order and accessibility.
This plate is notable for its comparative design. Specimens are spaced so that wing shapes—broad and scalloped beside narrow and elongated—can be read at a glance, while antennae and body proportions offer further cues. Such arrangements were intended as working tools: practical references for readers of natural history who required accuracy without visual distraction. In the present, that clarity reads as timeless composition.
Aesthetically, the print glows with restraint. A clean white field sets off soft yellows and warm oranges, tempered by natural browns and delicate neutral tints. Fine line work articulates venation and wing edges; transparent watercolor washes suggest the fragile translucence of the wings. Negative space is purposeful, allowing each moth to “breathe” and giving the sheet the poised symmetry that distinguishes Victorian entomological art. As wall decor, it imparts a scholarly calm—equally suited to a study, reading nook, hallway, or nursery.
This print makes a thoughtful gift for entomology enthusiasts, natural history lovers, and admirers of Victorian design—perfect for birthdays, housewarmings, Mother’s or Father’s Day, Christmas, or to celebrate a friend’s return from a museum visit or nature-filled journey.
