Wassily Kandinsky’s Entwurf Zu ‘grüner Rand’ (Study For ‘Green Border’) (1919) captures a pivotal moment in the birth of non-objective art. In the unsettled years just after World War I, Kandinsky pursued his conviction that painting could function like music—building emotion through intervals of line, color, and rhythm rather than through depiction. This study’s buoyant interplay of geometric and organic forms gathers around a vivid green perimeter, with a luminous field of yellow and flashes of orange setting a spirited, experimental tone.
Offered here as a museum-quality fine art print, your edition is produced with archival pigment inks on acid-free, heavyweight paper or on artist’s cotton canvas for gallery-level depth and texture. Choose from a range of sizes, with optional matting and framing. The Unique Maps Co. can personalize your print with custom sizing, border treatments, captions, and gift messaging—tailored to your space and style.
About the artist: Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) is widely regarded as a founder of abstract art. A leading figure of the European avant-garde and co-founder of Der Blaue Reiter, he championed the “spiritual” possibilities of painting in seminal writings and in his teaching. By the late 1910s he was refining a visual language of lines, arcs, and color harmonies that would soon crystalize in his Bauhaus years, shaping the look of modern design and painting for generations.
Why this work matters: created in 1919, at a time when artists across Europe were reimagining the role of art after the war, this study distills Kandinsky’s search for a new visual grammar. It bridges the expressive freedom of his pre-war canvases with the cleaner geometry that would define his 1920s work. As a preparatory composition, it reveals his method—testing balances of mass, motion, and chromatic contrast to produce a dynamic, internally coherent whole.
Color, style, and design: a radiant yellow ground plays against assertive bands of green—the “green border”—while bright oranges and cooler accents strike counterpoints across the surface. Black linear elements act like musical notation, conducting the eye through crescendos and rests. The conversation between crisp angles and softer biomorphic shapes creates a lively rhythm that reads as both playful and rigorous—an ideal focal point for modern, mid-century, or color-forward interiors.
A thoughtful gift for design lovers and modern art enthusiasts, this Kandinsky print makes a sophisticated choice for housewarmings, weddings, Christmas, or Mother’s and Father’s Day—especially for anyone who connects with the idea of painting as music made visible.
